Local government highways authority

Situation
Changes in legislation governing street works and traffic management placed new demands on an already overstretched department employing highly specialized people.  The department needed to find additional capacity to discharge its expanded duties and, in the light of HM Government’s Transformation Agenda, was tasked with also finding 'cashable' efficiency savings.    It was recognized that the productivity of staff was sub-optimal due to a variety of disparate information sources that failed to offer a coherent single view of the events likely to impact on the road network.

Solution
A method, apparatus and computing system were required to simplify the coordination of notices of proposed works by:

  1. Reducing the number of data interchange and capture steps.
  2. Providing a ‘map view’ of the road network that included feeds from the various information sources that would then enable staff to make informed decisions on whether to or not to approve the applications to carry out works.

Application designers worked 'across the desk' with the staff and stakeholders to agree the precise data structure, screen layout, workflow and approach to automating data feeds.  The result was a hosted, web-based workspace that delivers up-to-date information on road network activities and events that staff members can trust.
